Chinese New Year: The Year of the Dragon

Email Print PDF

Chinese zodiac chartJanuary 23, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon. Instead of the usual astrological information on Dragon personalities, here are some tidbits of the Chinese Dragon you may not know:

  • The Dragon was the symbol of the Emperor of China
  • Only he was allowed to wear that symbol on his clothes
  • Anyone else who wore it was subject to death

In Hung Ga Kung Fu:

  • The dragon trains the Spirit (unike the other animals, which teaches something physical)
  • It also trains the twisting power
  • It's associated with the Earth Element

demonstration of Hung Ga Kung FuThe following article was written by our own Sifu Chris Alexander and published in "Legends of Martial Arts" magazine, including demonstration photos of Sifu Chris and Sifu Matt.

In my younger years, I was a bit of a rabble rouser, and from the start, always regarded the martial arts from a combative point of view. I studied some karate, some kickboxing, and some Thai boxing, all with the notion that one day I would be called upon to use them in some emergency (usually one that could easily fit into the plot of any martial arts movie). During the Eighties, my search ended: I took up Hung-ga Kung-fu, and ended up staying with the style.
